Other things I can do

In case you forgot that I did things besides making belt buckles and publishing pictures with asinine commentary; I have a new piece in the online music and poetry magazine textsound.

You can listen to my piece titled Pareidolia at www.textsound.org. the piece is 6 minutes and 16 seconds, it was written and produced in 2008 and is track number 22 in this issue of textsound.

Here is the direct link: http://www.textsound.org/index.php?VOL=1&ISSUE=2&TRACK=22nbspPareidolia.mp3

Please feel free to let me know what you think.

Love,

Gabriel Burian-Mohr

Back in the old country

This was a Martin Creed installation at CCS. the piece is called Half the Air in a Given Space, it consists of a room filled with balloons. this is a view from the middle of the room.

The great thing about CCS is that art can exist in a vacuum. Where else could you have a show that filled a room with balloons, requiring three attendants to watch the doors at all times and help out each and every visitor who came, set up a system that turns all the lights in the galleries off and on throughout the day, and set up an installation with metronomes set to each and every speed requiring an attendant with white gloves to manually check and wind the metronomes, god knows how many times a day.

This is Julia after the MFA thesis show. It was nice being up at "art camp", it made me a little sad and made me wish I lived in the "country", oh wait, I do live in the "country" and I complain about it constantly.

Due to laziness, the post thesis show party was held at the Spiegeltent. The dj was, quite possibly, the worst dj ever. Attempts at dancing were mostly thwarted.

This is a video by Libby Hux, it's a bunny that can tell your fortune. If I could think of a way to incorporate a video installation in my apartment, this would be the video I would install.

This installation by Alisha Kerlin was also pretty sweet. I would install it into my apartment as well, even though I have had problems with sculptural installations in the home in the past.

I ran into Laetitia, she was very apologetic for not returning an email 10 or so months ago. She happened to mention that last year, while I was at Bard, some faculty had expressed concern that my work was getting dangerously close to Craft. It struck me as odd that nobody had mentioned this to me.

I visited Caesars studio we chated, with his encouragement I decided to make a shotgun synthesizer, he gave me some CD's of new work, one avant and one indie-pop. You should all go out and buy The Lisps album(s). If you can't decide which song to buy, I recommend Pepper Spray, it's pretty rockin.

I attended Dorothy Albertinis reading. After her reading she introduced me to her parents. I briefly thought about pretending I was a faculty member and telling them what a great student Dorothy was and what a joy she was to have in my classes.

The cigarettes taste so good

I took the Greyhound from Roseburg to Portland. I already had a ticket, however, the woman working the counter felt it necessary to give me hard time about not being at the station an hour early.

I met Mary and her friend Kim for lunch in Portland. We went to a hippie burrito place. Mary didn't get anything.

I went to galleries in the Pearl District. As usual, I was a little put off by some galleries taking themselves way too seriously.

I went to some mall where a woman at a kiosk washed my hands and then seemed annoyed that I wouldn't buy a giant container of salt.

I was tired of wandering around so I headed to the airport. I bought a transfer from some kids for 50 cents.

My plane was delayed.

I went to the bookstore and got recommendations on some books. The guy who did the recommending was extremely appreciative that I had asked and taken his recommendations.

I ended up getting Battle Royale. It's kind of like Lord of the Flies, but much more violent, and not really that much like Lord of the Flies.

When I arrived in New York my phone battery was dead. I had to wander around JFK looking for an outlet.

I met Stefan at the Eye & Ear clinic. He Had been there since early in the morning.
Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
I had an egg and cheese sandwich for breakfast at Mud Coffee. When I got out, Stefan was still waiting.

I went with Stefan, Ei and Gillian to the Stone. I wont go into my issues with the Stone, as I have mentioned them before. We saw Yasunao Tone (Laptop) with Carlos Giffoni (synthesizer) and Alan Licht (guitar). The performance had it's moments, I also wont go into my issues with laptop performance or Stefan's issues with analog synthesizers. Anyway, the performance was quite loud, and went for about an hour, there were points throughout the performance where one could have ended, one should have ended, and where performers and audience alike wanted it to end. After the performance, we were all promptly removed from the venue, in preparation for the next performance.

Ei left and we met up with Greg and went to that Thai restaurant in Williamsburg.
Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
Gillian left and we went to Greenpoint and wandered around for a while trying to find some party. We found said party, however, it had mostly dispersed by the time we got there(it was around 11:30 on a Thursday). We stuck around too drink the beer we had brought. They were blasting N.W.A and Peaches in the backyard, and no one seemed to mind .

We went to Enids, where we met some very angry young ladies. They had been forcibly removed from some concert (maybe Torri Amos), and were now wandering the streets drinking from a large jug of red wine.

Denver, not scary, just cold

Had an egg McMuffin for breakfast, I asked for it without bacon and my server asked if I wanted it flat or folded, I had no idea what this meant and just picked one. They forgot to put cheese on it.

I stopped at the Colorado welcome center. The woman working at the welcome center was very friendly and gave me several guides and maps. I had something they called coffee although any similarity between the two beverages was purely coincidental.

Rachel and Andy met me after work, we went to a restaurant where I had a buffalo burger, it was quite meaty.

Me and Rachel headed for the Capsule. I played what I thought was a good show, to a small yet enthusiastic audience. After the show I did a Q&A, I'm not sure how articulate I was. I believe there is a pod-cast of the performance and Q&A.

Sabado e Domingo

This is a t-shirt I made for Thanksgiving. I think of it as a declaration of my strong feelings toward Thanksgiving

Here is a non-chronological list of things I've done in the past ___ weeks:

My/our very good friend Crispin Webb died around Thanksgiving, his death was due to a coronary disease. We will all miss him dearly. There were various event to remember him, I went to the one at The Stone, it was actually supposed to be a performance by Brenda Hutchinson

I've gone to various concerts, most notably, Kevin Blechdom with DAT Politics, Ching Chong Song, DJ Nron (the name seems a little less funny however many years later, but, he was really good) and this beat-boxing guy, all at Tonic. All of the above were awesome and I saw Sabrina there. I went to Stefan's show at the Stone. Stefan played a very fragile/delicate/vulnerable/... set, it was quite elegant (maybe that's the word I'm looking for). I might go so far to say he was at his best or as good as the time we played together at Cynthia Broan Gallery.

Kelly had a screening at Anthology. Her film using Penelope Umbrico's source material was amazing, I voted it best in show. Kelly brought me her old PC laptop, but, the wrong power supply, so, although there are no pictures now there will be soon.

For thanksgiving I went to potluck thanksgiving with my friend Abby, from work. I brought a pumpkin pie, but, there was so much food that I didn't actually have any. Stefan came out as well and K8 was there as well as Wynne, we played this very strange board/card game where I spent too much of my time trying to understand the strategy of my opponents moves, thus, me and Abby lost. I wanted leftover turkey, so, a few days later I went to super market to get one, they had no turkeys , I got a chicken instead, it's really not the same thing.

At work I was sexually harassed at work by a very large, Gayanese man with a mullet. I don't really feel like going into the sorted details now, maybe another time.

We finished the windows at ABC, they are quite festive. If your near Union Square, you should check them out (corner of Broadway & 19th, on Broadway). Here are some pictures:

The tree and large quantity's of fake snow

A $3000 chandeliers covered in toxic plastic icicles...Awesome.

I moved off of Laura's floor. We were both a little sad, it had been like a slumber party except that each day we went to work. So, I'm staying at the old place in Bed Stuy, since Alison is out of town. It's a little wired, the first day or so I wasn't sure if I should stay in the bed or not.

I'm still working at ABC, which is a relief, because, I was kind of dreading working as a temporary FedEx driver, and having to be a temp garbage man during the week of training at minimum wage

At some point I was working three jobs.

The job in San Francisco got canceled(?) here is the email I was sent:

"After much deliberation about recruiting a candidate for a VISTA
position at ____, we have decided to suspend the search until the next
round in mid-2007, and take some more time refining and planning for
our technology needs. Thus, we will not be able to offer it to anyone
for this current cycle."

wired right? This all after a month of interviews, postponement of getting back to the Oregon job, opting out of the Baltimore job, etc. etc.

So, I'm moving at the beginning of January to rural Oregon (Roseburg, Oregon, specifically) To work for a non-for-profit that teaches artists to be self sustaining. I'm really excited and a little terrified about moving to city with a population of 40,000. I think it'll be really good though and when else am I going to have an opportunity like this. I don't even think I have met 40,000 people, I probably only know like 100 people anyway. I'll be gone for one year, but, I think I'll probably end up back in New York, who knows.

I've been looking for a car, this has led me too a conclusion I was already aware of, but, I'll mention it again, I really hate craigslist. I've also been on the ebaymotors web site, thinking about it, I'm a little embarrassed to say I bought a car on eBay...whatever.

Photos from Friday September 8 2006

This is a picture of Alison outside K-mart once I got the camera out. Looks like it has a fish eye thing going on...spooky

This appears to be sidewalk.

a building maybe an elbow.

Alison's leg.
A ghost.
Ghost.
Griff Dog
A corndog the size of my head. Next time I will get a regular hot dog in the corndog instead of the veggie dog because the texture didn't actually work right.
dissected corn dog and debree.
a very small batman.
the future.
this is a giant fish at a Chinese resturant near Union Square. It's hard to tell here but it totally looks like a dinosaur.

Brenda Hutchinson's Bell project
we ran into Josh Thorson he had gone to the Today Show very early in the morning to see Beyonce.
Kate was working the opening at Jack the Pelican Presents, we learned that this camera needs to be held slightly higher than one would think.
ghosts from the future
at another opening on Union where the pictures were very large Xerox transfers and there were dresses(?) to we had some beer. We had met up with Rit, his friend Laura and her boyfriend whose name I can't remember.we had saved the last two pictures for dinner at Chula Taco or possibly Taco Chulo or some other spelling or some other combination. This may or may not be a picture of tacos or us near eaten tacos...you be the judge.
Tacos or galleries or a bar where we had some cheese or the cab home or something else altogether.
